Deep within the captivating rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His existence was here essentially untarnished, simple, and honest. His main role was to look after his herd of ewes.
Their low murmuring and the rustling of the gales among the single tree on the peak were his constant companions. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
But, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.
Tales of wolves preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.
One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to offer assistance but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the dilemma on their faces. This prank laughed for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is hard to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
